This Week’s Poll: Malo vs. Tierra

Some songs never leave us. They become the soundtrack to family gatherings, neighborhood celebrations, long drives, and memories shared across generations.

This week, Capacitando.org celebrates two legendary Chicano bands whose music helped define an era while showcasing the creativity and talent of Mexican American musicians: Malo and Tierra.

Formed in California during the 1970s, both groups blended Latin rhythms with rock, soul, jazz, R&B, and funk to create sounds that were unmistakably their own. Their music crossed cultural boundaries while remaining deeply connected to the experiences and traditions of Chicano communities throughout the United States.

Malo, founded by Jorge Santana, became famous for its energetic Latin rock sound and timeless hits such as Suavecito, often called one of the greatest Chicano love songs ever recorded. Their musicianship and fusion of genres helped establish Latin rock as a lasting force in popular music.

Tierra, led by brothers Rudy and Steve Salas, brought together soulful vocals, classic R&B influences, and heartfelt ballads that resonated with audiences across generations. Songs like Together and Memories remain staples at celebrations and continue to introduce new listeners to the band’s enduring style.

Both groups helped expand opportunities for Chicano artists in the music industry, demonstrating that Mexican American musicians could achieve national success while remaining true to their cultural roots. Their influence can still be heard in today’s Latin rock, soul, and contemporary Latino artists.
