Sharing the richness of our culture and contributions with today’s youth brings immense joy. One of the greatest joys of teaching Ethnic Studies and Chicanx Studies is that I get paid for it. Part of that culture is, of course, music. I am lucky to work at a Performing Arts Magnet. Many of my students have backgrounds in music. They are keen to see where music fits into the story of our society. It is a great pleasure to help them. I show them where today’s artists are connected to those of the past. This helps me highlight a crucial idea. In any age, contributors to our civilization build upon those who came before them.
Ralfi Pagán and Kali Uchis definitely share some sonic and emotional DNA. They come from different eras and genres. If you’re looking for a Ralfi Pagán song that most closely aligns with Kali Uchis’ dreamy, soulful, bilingual vibe, especially her work on albums like Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios), the closest match would probably be:
“Make It With You” (1971)
Here’s why:
- It’s smooth, romantic, and has that lowrider soul feel—lush and melodic like Kali’s slower songs.
- Ralfi’s vocals are soft, sensual, and emotional, much like Kali’s signature breathy style.
- The production is laid-back and vintage, evoking the same nostalgic, lo-fi warmth that Kali often leans into.
- It also has a genre-blending vibe—soul with a Latin twist—which mirrors how Kali blends R&B, reggaetón, bolero, and soul.
Another close runner-up might be:
“I’m Just Your Fool”
- It’s got a more doo-wop/soul crossover feel. The emotional vocal delivery is something that Kali fans would appreciate. This is especially true for those who love her more vintage-inspired tracks.
Here is a playlist that mixes both their styles. It includes some added tracks by other artists. These tracks create a great vibe!
